Volunteer Opportunities
The Heart of a Volunteer
There is no better exercise for your heart,
Than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.

Ida and Laurie Bickley
Here are two ladies who are the "heart" of the Columbus Library! Ida and Laurie are volunteers at the library, which is located in the South Salt Lake area. They work 3 mornings a week, and average 50 hours of service a month. They organize and shelve toddler books, make sure the new book displays are current, and prepare materials for book sales and for story time.
Ida is 80 years old, and is a recent widow. She approached the library to volunteer because she felt the need to broaden her interests and be of service. She is the mother of eleven children, has sparkling eyes and delightful sense of humor. Laurie is 37 years old and has Down’s Syndrome. Prior to her work at the library, Laurie was a volunteer at Hartvigsen L.D.S. Seminary. She also served as an L.D.S. Service Missionary for 12 years. Laurie has a love of books, a lovely smile, and like her mother, a fun sense of humor. Laurie has a lot to teach others, and a lot to give.
Ida's prior accomplishments include completing her college degree in Child Development and teaching elementary-aged children. She also volunteered for 30 years teaching children with special needs.
Another Giving Heart
Janet Wuori
Janet Wuori is a retired nurse who has a knack for making a person feel cared for. She is a volunteer who provides older adults who lack transportation to critical destinations, like doctor's appointments. She says the wonderful thing about serving is that she always learns something from her clients. Through volunteering a little of her time, she gets back far more treasures than she gives
