Family Health Services

Description
Salt Lake City-County Health Department's Family Health Services' volunteers work at the various public health clinics assisting health care professionals with providing a variety of health services to people of all ages and backgrounds.  Some of the programs offered are Women, Infants and Children (W.I.C.), Well Child, Immunizations, H.I.V. testing and counseling, cancer screening, family planning, and public health nursing.  Volunteers also assist with providing instruction in nutrition, health education and exercise.

Volunteer Opportunities
Public Health Volunteer  Assist health care professionals with providing a variety of health services to patients at public health clinics.
Health Education Volunteer  Assist professional health educators and nurses with providing information on a variety of health and wellness topics to people at public health clinics through programs such as W.I.C. and Well Child.
Nutrition Volunteer  Assist professional nutritionists and nurses with efforts to educate patients and the general public on healthy nutrition and food safety through programs such as W.I.C. and Food Handler's Permit classes.
H.I.V./A.I.D.S. Counselor  Advise people who are at a high risk for becoming infected with or who have been newly diagnosed as being H.I.V. or A.I.D.S. positive about nutrition, life style, and emotional and mental health issues.

Volunteer Requirements
*  Education or interest in a career as a health care professional or a nutritionist preferred.  Internships are available to students currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in nutrition, nursing or other health care fields.
*  Counseling background or experience preferred for volunteers working as H.I.V./A.I.D.S. counselors
*  Ability to speak a second language, particularly Spanish, appreciated.

Training & Support

Training is provided prior to the commencement of volunteer work as well as training on-the-job.
